Honors, awards, appointments, etc.

James Weinstein, DO, president and CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock and a professor of orthopaedic surgery, was named one of the "100 most influential people in health care" by Modern Healthcare. The industry publication's annual ranking honors "individuals in health care who are deemed by their peers and an expert panel to be the most influential individuals in the industry, in terms of leadership and impact."

Harold Swartz, MD, PhD, a professor of radiology and of medicine, was appointed the Alma Hass Milham Distinguished Chair in Clinical Medicine at Geisel. Under his leadership, Swartz's team of researchers has played an important role in creating new ways to assess levels of radiation. He invented the portable dosimeter device, which detects levels of radiation in teeth and can assess radiation injuries in survivors of radiological or nuclear catastrophes.

The New Hampshire Pediatric Society honored two Geisel faculty. William Edwards, MD, a professor of pediatrics, was named Pediatrician of the Year by the society. He pioneered family-centered neonatal care in New Hampshire, leads efforts to prevent neonatal infections, and acts as a consultant to community physicians across New Hampshire. He is vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Geisel. William Boyle, MD, a professor of pediatrics and of community and family medicine, was named Retired Pediatrician of the Year. In addition to his career as a primary-care pediatrician, he devotes his time to caring for children with cystic fibrosis, cancer, and diabetes. He is chair of the Boyle Community Pediatrics Program, endowed in his name by a grateful patient.

Daniel Walsh, MD, a professor of surgery, was named president of the Vermont Medical Society.

John-Erik Bell, MD, an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, was honored by Orthopedics This Week as one of the top 28 North American shoulder surgeons.
