From 'round the girdled Earth they've come

Dartmouth's alma mater posits that the institution retains a hold on its graduates no matter where they end up: "Though 'round the girdled Earth they roam, her spell on them remains," as the song famously puts it.

Spell: But this year's crop of incoming students at Dartmouth Medical School suggests that nowadays, Dartmouth casts a worldwide spell even before students have spent several years on the Hanover Plain.

Below are a few random statistics about this fall's 204 first-year students at DMS—including the countries they hail from.

The Medical School has four broad degree offerings—an M.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. program, two Ph.D. programs, and a health-policy program.
