Naomi Hartov says of her work that "the title usually gives a hint as to what I think may be going on in the piece, but I like to leave it a bit vague so each observer can read into it what he or she 'sees.'

"'Emergence' has become a recurring theme in my work, and I think this reflects how I have always thought of myself—as a work in progress . . . that whoever 'I' am is continually emerging. This theme also allows me to juxtapose very disparate images in a way that I find fascinating."
