Removing Gloves
Oil on Canvas, 20 inches by 16 inches
By Joe Wilder, M.D., Dartmouth College '42 (1920-2003)

The late Joe Wilder's intimate paintings of operating room scenes were the subject of the cover feature in the Fall 2002 issue of Dartmouth Medicine—and the obvious choice to inaugurate this new section, which will highlight a work of art with some medical message and some Dartmouth tie. Wrote art historian Ira Rutkow of this image: "Wilder is the doyen of surgeon-painters, and his creative genius declares that medicine must continue as the most scientific of humanities and the most humane of sciences."
