In 2004, New Hampshire was rated the nation's healthiest state based on 21 measures, including the following:

Teenage birth rate
Lowest in U.S.

Infant mortality rate
Lowest in U.S.

Childhood immunization rate
Second-highest in U.S.

. . . with a little help from DHMC

In fiscal year 2002, the most recent year for which figures have been published, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center provided these community benefits in New Hampshire:

Subsidized health services, from free vaccinations to trauma services
$6.4 million

Direct financial assistance to patients
$12.3 million

Number of patients receiving financial assistance
486,094

Subsidized community-based programs, from support for local agencies to payments in lieu of property taxes
$30.9 million

Uncompensated Medicare and Medicaid services
$40.2 million
