Jankowski Receives Article of the Year Award

Kay Jankowski, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine, has received the Article of the Year Award for 2019 from Child Maltreatment, a leading peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.

Jankowski's paper, published in February of 2019 and entitled Effectiveness of a Trauma-informed Care Initiative in a State Child Welfare System: A Randomized Study, reported on the successful implementation of a web-based screening program to identify children with post-traumatic symptoms and other mental health problems.

The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, used a rigorous study design that included linking the screenings to effective case planning and evidence-based treatments, as well as training mental health providers across the state in trauma-informed care. Child welfare staffwere then surveyed on how their practicesand perceptions changed as a result ofthe intervention.

Alison Holmes Named Associate Deanfor Student Affairs at Geisel

Geisel School of Medicine Dean Duane Compton, PhD, has named Alison Volpe Holmes, MD, MPH, the school's new associate dean for student affairs. Holmes is an associate professor of pediatrics, medical education, and of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, and has led the school's residency advising program, focused on preparing third- and fourth-year medical students for the National Residency Match Program (aka "The Match") since 2018.

In this role, Holmes will report to the senior associate dean for medical education and will be responsible for leading the Office of Student Affairs, advancing programmatic initiatives, and providing support to students to enable their success in all phases of their education. She will work closely with faculty, staff, and medical students to promote a positive, equitable, and inclusive learning environment.

For Holmes, a critical objective for this new role will be to bolster career advising services to help students identify and achieve their professional goals. As part of these efforts to facilitate student professional development, she will continue to direct Geisel's residency advising program and plans to integrate residency advising and career planning across all years of the curriculum.

Jocelyn Chertoff Named Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Radiological Society of North America

Jocelyn D. Chertoff, MD, MS, MHCDS, professor and chair of radiology at Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, and professor of radiology and obstetrics at Geisel, has been named the 2019 Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). She received the award on Sunday, Dec. 1, during RSNA's annual meeting in Chicago.

Given to one physician annually, the award recognizes those who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the field of radiology, are pioneers in their specialty, and have made significant contributions to radiologic education during the past 15 years.

"I feel very fortunate to be part of a community that prioritizes the things I value—patient care, quality, and innovation—and recognizes that the essential foundation is education," says Chertoff who is also vice president of the Regional Radiology Service Line at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

Renowned Parasitologist Joseph Inselburg, an Emeritus Professorat Geisel School of Medicine, Dies

Joseph Willard Inselburg, MD, professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at Geisel School of Medicine, died February 29. He was 82 years old. His research career at Dartmouth's medical school spanned 34 years.

"Joe's presence in microbiology, alongside Elmer Pfefferkorn, led to the recruitment and establishment of an outstanding parasitology group in the department, including David Bzik, PhD, Joe Schwartzman, MD, and Lloyd Kasper, MD," says David Leib, PhD, chair of microbiology and immunology. "His groundbreaking work on the molecular biology of Plasmodium falciparum has led to a number of important advances including a malaria vaccine currently in phase 2clinical trials."

Nancy Formella, Former Geisel Associate Professor and President of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, Dies

Nancy Formella, MSN, CNNA, who held many top positions at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, died Thursday, January 16. She was 66 years old and lived in East Kingston, NH. Formella was a former member of the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School (now Geisel School of Medicine) in community and family medicine and then psychiatry as an associate professor. In 2006, Formella became interim president, then co-president with Thomas Colacchio, MD, of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic. She retired from Dartmouth-Hitchcock in 2012, becoming the chief operating officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA, in 2013, where she stayed until herretirement in 2017.
