Patrick Saine has been the manager of ophthalmic photography at DHMC since 1997. In that role, by day, he captures diagnostic images of patients' retinas. On his own time, he creates kaleidoscopic "digital quilts" from ophthalmic images by colorizing, rotating, and layering them. The composition above, evocative of desert flowers, is based on photographs of the fundus—the curved surface opposite the pupil on the interior of the eyeball. "As we view these images," says Saine of his work, "our retinas are privy to a part of the body which is normally hidden. At the same time, this is art which is looking back at us."
