Mary Jo Turk Named the O. Ross McIntyre, MD, Professor
Mary Jo Turk, PhD, was named the O. Ross McIntyre, MD, Professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Turk, a professor of microbiology and immunology and co-director of the Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy Program at Dartmouth's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, conducts pioneering research in improving the immune system's response to cancer.
O'Toole Named the Elmer R. Pfefferkorn, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology
George O'Toole, PhD, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Geisel, was named the Elmer R. Pfefferkorn, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Geisel. The appointment recognizes O'Toole's outstanding contributions to microbiology and immunology both as a scientist and mentor to students over his 20-year career at Dartmouth.
Gerber Named the Inaugural Kenneth E. and Carol L. Weg Distinguished Professor
Scott A. Gerber, PhD, professor of molecular and systems biology and of biochemistry and cell biology at Geisel and program director of the Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Research Program at Dartmouth's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, was named the Kenneth E. and Carol L. Weg Distinguished Professor. An expert in mass spectrometry and proteomics, Gerber is the first to hold this newly established professorship given by Kenneth Weg D '60 and his wife, Carol Weg.
Hassanpour Recipient of Early Career Professor Award
Saeed Hassanpour, PhD, an assistant professor of biomedical data science and of epidemiology at Geisel and of computer science at Dartmouth College, received the 2019 Agilent Early Career Professor Award.
Halpern Named Chair of the Dept. of Molecular and Systems Biology
Marnie E. Halpern, PhD, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science and adjunct professor of biology and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, was named the chair of Geisel's Department of Molecular and Systems Biology.
National Healthcare Delivery Award Given to Faculty
Bonny Whalen, MD, Steve Chapman, MD, Alison Holmes, MD, MPH, Julia Frew MED '05, and Daisy Goodman, DNP, MPH (TDI '14), all Geisel faculty, received the Academic Pediatric Association's Health Care Delivery award for their exceptional work with mothers and newborns with opioid dependence.
Riddle Recognized by Cancer Registry Community
Bruce Riddle, PhD, MA, an instructor in epidemiology at Geisel, received the Constance L. Percy Award for Distinguished Service from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, the umbrella organization of central registries in the U.S. and Canada.
Hillier Named Chair of Anesthesiology
Simon Hillier, MD, was appointed chair and service line leader for anesthesiology and perioperative services at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and of anesthesiology at Geisel.
Professor William F. Wade Dies
William F. Wade, PhD, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Geisel, died unexpectedly in May 2019. An avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting, he died in Maine while on a fishing trip. He was 63 years old.
Glowa Recipient of Tow Humanism in Medicine Award
Patricia T. Glowa, MD, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, of pediatrics, and of community and family medicine at Geisel, received the 2019 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award for both clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care.
Torrey Recognized by National Alliance on Mental Illness
William C. Torrey, MD, a professor of psychiatry, was named the 2019 Exemplary Psychiatrist by the National Alliance on Mental Illness—the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness.
O'Malley Receives Distinguished Award for Scientific Excellence
James O'Malley, MS, PhD, a professor of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and of biomedical data science and director of the Program in Quantitative Biomedical Sciences at Geisel, received the 2019 International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Award for Excellence in Health Economics and Outcomes Research Methodology.
Pipas Recipient of Gold Humanism Award
Catherine Florio Pipas, MD, MPH '11, a professor of community and family medicine at Geisel, received the 2019 Gold Humanism Award from The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, a national community of academic leaders committed to advancing family medicine to improve health through a community of teachers and scholars.
