The Association of American Medical Colleges has conducted public opinion polling on what determines patients' choice of a doctor. The following percentages of patients say these factors have a lot of influence on their choice:

Recommendations of friends or family members: 87%
Communicates well/caring attitude: 85%
Ability to explain complicated medical procedures: 77%
Good listening skills: 76%
Board certification: 70%
Accepting certain health insurance: 50%
Years in practice: 32%
