Worthy of Note: Honors, awards, appointments, etc.

Jocelyn Chertoff, M.D., a professor of radiology, assistant medical director of medical staff affairs, and assistant dean for clinical affairs, received the Distinguished Academic Achievement Award from the Alumni Association of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, of which she is a 1981 graduate. She is also chair-elect of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Group on Women in Medicine and Science.

Ronald Taylor, Ph.D., a professor of microbiology and immunology, was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the honorific leadership group of the American Society for Microbiology, the world's oldest and largest life science organization. Taylor's laboratory develops anti-cholera vaccines and drugs.

Gregory Holmes, M.D., a professor of neurology, chair of the Department of Neurology, and director of the Dartmouth Neuroscience Center, received the 2011 Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award from Dartmouth's Graduate Student Council and Office of Graduate Studies. The award recognizes faculty members who exemplify a deep commitment to fostering the professional and personal development of graduate students.

Samuel Bakhoum, an M.D.-Ph.D. student, was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Young Investigator award by the American Society for Clinical Investigation for his abstract "A molecular network reveals the exquisite sensitivity of dividing cancer cells to microtubule perturbation."

Katelyn Byrne, a Ph.D. student in microbiology, was awarded one of seven nationally competitive Research Scholar Awards by the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation.

Alex Kotlyar and Evan Lebovitz, both M.D. students, were named Howard Hughes Medical Institute-NIH Research Scholars.

Laura Ostapenko, an M.D. student, was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Fellowship.

Edmund Tsui, an M.D. student, was awarded an Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Research Fellowship; AOA is the national medical honor society.

Peter Bendix, M.D., a resident in surgery, was awarded a Fogarty International Clinical Research Fellowship to study the burden of surgical disease in Mozambique's rural areas.

Dartmouth Medical School was once again ranked among the nation's top medical schools by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine surveyed 146 schools and placed DMS 34th on a scale emphasizing research and 39th on a scale emphasizing the number of graduates who go into primary care. DMS was the smallest school to be included on the top-50 research list.

DHMC's Bariatric Surgery Program earned Level 1 accreditation from the American College of Surgeons' Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program. To earn Level 1 accreditation, hospitals must demonstrate that they have the capacity to manage and have committed resources to provide complete bariatric surgical care. Accredited hospitals have high-volume practices and can manage the most challenging and complex patients.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center was recently recognized by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and the International Lactation Consultant Association for its excellence in lactation care.
