Biographical Sketch

I was born on January 10, 1925, in Springfield, Mass., graduated from Bates College in 1948, and from Harvard Medical School in 1952. Following a rotating internship at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, N.H., I completed a pediatric internship and assistant residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1955, I commenced a pediatric practice in Bangor, Maine, for three years, then moved to Rochester, N.Y., for the next 13 years, to join a three-person pediatric practice. After 6 years of private practice, I joined the full-time faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Rochester School of Medicine. Introduced to the problems of migrant farm workers, I worked in voluntary medical programs in rural areas near Rochester and consulted with other programs in the U.S. In 1970, I moved to a comprehensive health program in Southern California, and in 1973, my wife, Dotty, and I volunteered to work with Cˇsar Chavez and the United Farm Workers of America, establishing a clinic in the San Joaquin Valley. Completely exhausted after three years, I joined Pueblo Neighborhood Health Center, the Greeley Health Center, and finally Stanford Medical School where in 1982 I became a clinical associate professor of community medicine. In 1977, I added board certification in family medicine to pediatrics. In 1986, I joined the faculty at Dartmouth Medical School where I retired in 1991.

Most of my career has included a liberal sprinkling of house calls, usually in community health-care programs, primarily working with migrant farm-workers or rural underserved populations. I recently wrote a book-length memoir titled "House Calls With John,"summarizing those experiences. The book was published by Randall Publishing and is available through the Dartmouth Bookstore (http://dartmouthbooks.bkstore.com; bksdartmouth@bncollege.com; or 603-643-3616). Copies can also be obtained by sending a check made out to John Radebaugh for $19.95 per book, plus $5.00 for mailing and handling, to: John Radebaugh, 6 Blueberry Lane, #C-49, Falmouth, ME 04105.
