Graduates start a new chapter
On the day that the 210 newest graduates of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth received their degrees, speaker Abraham Verghese reminded them that even with everything they have learned to do, sometimes their most important role will be simply as listeners.
Verghese, a professor and senior associate chair for the theory and practice of medicine at Stanford, is an accomplished writer—his books include the bestseller Cutting for Stone—but he said that listening to his patients' stories has been essential not just to his writing but to his clinical practice. Through stories he has developed closer relationships with patients, helping him to care for them better, even when there is little that conventional medicine can offer.
The 210 graduates include 103 new physicians, 33 PhD recipients,
56 recipients of an MPH, and 18 MS graduates.
